Summary:

“If the number of players mad as Outsiders isn’t expected, a mad player might be executed. [-1 or +1 Outsider]”

The Mistress only has so many beds for Outsiders.

How to Run:

While setting up the game, before putting the character tokens in the bag, either remove one Townsfolk and add one Outsider or remove one Outsider and add one Townsfolk.

While preparing the first night, add a 0, 1, or 2 reminder to the centre of the left side of the Grimoire, depending on the the number shown on the Town Square sheet.

If a player is mad that they are an Outsider, mark them with a MAD reminder. If they stop being mad, remove the reminder.

If the number of players who are MAD doesn’t match the expected number, you can decide to execute any 1 MAD player. Declare this to the group. They die. If you execute them during the day before the normal execution happens, go to the night phase. (There is a maximum of one execution per day.)

If there are extra or fewer mad players than expected, give a second for anyone to become mad or to back down.

When players stop being mad (e.g. to let a real Outsider come out & be mad) be careful of the implications. The players will remember this.

Examples:

<aside> 📖 There are 10 players in the game. There should be 0 Outsiders, but the Mistress has added 1, the Recluse. The Recluse says to the group that they are actually the Courtier in order to not be mad as an Outsider.

<aside> 📖 There are 9 players in the game. Instead of the expected 2 Outsiders, there is only 1 in play. When the Saint is nominated, they tell everyone who they are. Soon after, the Al-Hadikhia claims to be the Puzzlemaster.

<aside> 📖 There are 15 players in the game. Instead of the expected 2 Outsiders, there are 3 in play. The Hatter tells everyone who they are when they die. In order to make up the correct number of mad players, the Chef “reveals” that they were actually the Klutz, at the chagrin of the actual Klutz.
